Tuesday I took the afternoon to check out the area. The concierge had pointed me to a route to Mission Beach (1 mile) from the hotel, then one route down its boardwalk (1+ mile) to one end, and then back. So I was happy to get at least three miles in and on top of that, I would include a little beach side shopping and photo shoots. There is something not quite comfortable about running with a purse and camera strapped to your body, but I made it work. I wasn't going to let that interfere with my afternoon to myself.
As soon as I set off, I take a picture of the bridge that I will soon embark to, to get to Mission Beach:
While on the bridge, I got this shot (and I wasn't even scared!):
I made it over...and by the way, as I ran on the sidewalk, there is a generous bike lane on the road next to me. Raleigh, are you listening? BIKE LANES!!! And sidewalks all the way to the beach...is that too much to ask?
Here's a shot of the Welcome to Mission Beach sign. Note the roller coaster in the background:
I made it to the boardwalk and followed it to its end (that would be left, facing the beach). Nice boardwalk - plenty of room, although the sand washes right to it.
This is where I started:
And the end of this part of the boardwalk:
And my last shot is to show how close houses are to the boardwalk and the beach:
I love this place. I got one catcall during my run on the boardwalk and two honks on the run back to the Hyatt. BTW, those honks scared the shit out of me.
